SAN CARLINO ALLE QUATTRO FONTANE
Description
At the intersection between Via delle Quattro Fontane and Via XX Settembre, four little fountains that sign the crossing coincide.
One of the fountains leans on the walls of the church of San Carlino. This church is one of the most important masterpieces of the Roman baroque; it was built by Borromini in 1634. The space of the church, though in little dimensions, represents an example of a perfect spatial unity. The curvilinear plan, the elliptic dome with the peculiar caisson design, the animated façade, make this church a peculiar architectural jewel.
In the same Via XX Settembre you can visit the church of S. Andrea al Quirinale by Bernini; it is considered too one of the most important works of baroque art. |
