Description
It rises on the ancient Domitian Stadium, whose elliptic shape it maintains. It is of one of the most beautiful and most famous squares in Rome, in which you can admire masterpieces by artists like Bernini, Borromini e Giacomo Della Porta, who were among the most important exponents of Baroque Art.
In the square there are three magnificent fountains: the central one, the Rivers' Fountain made by Bernini who built it as a base for the Egyptian obelisk here transferred from Maxentius Circus; the lateral ones, Moor's Fountain and Calderoni's Fountain, that were designed by Giacomo Della Porta before Bernini built the memorable central fountain. In the center of the square, in front of the berninian fountain, the Church of St. Agnes in Agone stands, made by G. Rainaldi and Borromini; it represents a magnificent example of Baroque building. Within the church you can see in the basements the ruins of the original church and of Domitian's Stadium.
The place, one of the most frequented in Rome, both by tourists and Romans, is a meeting-place that welcomes thousands of people till very late at night, offering, in the neighborhoods, night-clubs and restaurants of all sorts; the wine shops of the area are quite famous. |
