Description

|
Built in the VI century over the Ercules's Ara Massima, it was enlarged during the VIII century by Adrian.
In Romanesque period the bell tower was built and several restorations and remaking were carried out. The beautiful flooring dating back to the VII century is quite noticeable.
In the portico, on the church's wall, the Mouth of Truth is located; this bas-relief is very famous in the world, most of all because of legends referable to it: it was told that who tells a lie while his own hand is inserted into the mouth of truth, will see his arm cut off.
Near the church, then you can visit the very famous Vesta's Temple; really this name originates from the fact that the building is circular like the homonymous temple located in the Roman Forum. Precisely it was dedicated to Ercules the Winner, was built around the II century b. C. and it is the more ancient marble Roman temple last till present times. |
