Description
|
|
This Basilica has very ancient origins; its first building dates back to the Imperial Era: when the chains that had imprisoned San Pietro arrived in Rome, Eudossia, wife of the emperor Valentiniano III, decided to built this church, where they had to be preserved.
The present look is to be dated back to the works that Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere (then Pope Giulio II) directed about the end of the XV century.
The anterior portico is quite interesting, but you can find the real spectacle in the interior: the Moses by Michelangelo.
This statue is an integrating part of the funeral monument to Giulio II. Although the set was not built like the great artist had thought (there had to be more than 40 statues), the Moses is a masterpiece of the Renaissance, recognized all over the world as an artistic work incomparably expressive and beautiful. |
